The project’s main initiative was to inspire others to one day follow in the footsteps, or indeed giant leaps, of everyday teachers that were hand-picked from thousands of prospective candidates, to serve as Payload Specialists on daring Space Shuttle missions.
Tragically, mission STS-51-L would become legendary for the wrong reasons, as the vessel Challenger exploded shortly after launch, leading to the loss of life for all those on-board. Nevertheless, Christa McAuliffe and her fellow astronauts' extraordinary bravery and steadfast determination to furthering the space programme has endured to this day.
