M'aidez... Help me... Muh-ay-daye.

So, thus far, even on the basis of advanced mutual compatibility on the basis of a primary initial ident, what hasn't been confirmed concerning the finer details of Lister's jacket?

Well, most obviously, we don't know the make of the jacket itself. We do however know it's more or less a Perfecto lancer-fronted cut [apparently British-made], and features side venting, cuff poppers, belt poppers, popperless lapels, loose belt, no coin pocket, vertical zipped pockets, and angled zipped breast pockets. We know that the screen-right sleeve is missing much of its elbow, and the screen-left shoulder has similarly been reattached using grommets and loosely-bound cord. FOUND

Kryten
Side Note: My own pointless theory regarding the supposed origins of the jacket can be found in Back To Reality #10, in which I posited that Lister's leathers may very well have been the ones Kryten wore in the closing shot of his Series II introductory episode, as they share much the same shape and style. It even features what appears to be the same skull & crossbones pin, as seen on Lister's screen-left sleeve during Series III - despite the show's then-costume designer being Jacki Pinks, prior to the arrival of 'leatherworker,' Howard Burden.

With the 'noid needing to be recast... ahem, rebuilt... having crashed Lister's space bike into an asteroid, given the necessity of literally patching up the outfit, in addition to repairing torn sleeves and the like, this would have neatly explained why the jacket suddenly materialized three series in. But, that was before Doug kindly took the time to include the following head-canon-evaporating line during the Series XII episode, Cured, in which Lister explains to the jacket's rival über fan, Hitler [somewhat ironic, given that between Series III-V, the piece does feature Nazi paraphernalia on the collar], "I bought it in a second-hand shop on Mimas, and then I painted it meself."

If this line is meant to imply that the latest jacket is in fact the same jacket Lister has always worn throughout the series, then does it also mean that the show's ever-fluxing continuity has been hard-reset, yet again? Arguably, the first time this happened was between Series II and III [when the jacket was first introduced], and now, between Series IX and X. Yes, probably a coincidence, but a compelling one at that, as it does seem that whenever Lister's threads encounter an upgrade, inexorably then so does his back-story; in turn, ushering in a new era by rebooting the series' on-board memory.

Anyway, let's have a look at what's still left to find on the most iconic jacket ever to be made, ever. Ever.

As I haven't been able to cram in reference photos for absolutely everything here, when I get the chance, I'll add a new page to the header with handy pictures for each piece.

Series V Jacket, The Inquisitor

01. Dangling from the screen-right breast pocket is a holographic key-chain - the type you used to be able to pick-up from many a good Science Museum gift-shop. The design resembles a sparkling comet racing past a ringed planet[oid] [Series III-V]. FOUND

02. There is, what appears to be a small, elongated, soft-enamelled flag pin on the screen-left lapel [Series V].

03. On the screen-right lapel, is a red and white soft-enamel pin similar to Madonna's True Blue album cover [Series III-Back To Earth]. FOUND

04. There is an unidentified, circular, embroidered patch by lower screen-right side, zipped pocket [Series V].

05. On the screen-left collarbone, there's a distinctive, red, running man pin [Series III-V, Series VII, Back To Earth].

The Inquisitor
06. Resting beside the jacket's lower, screen-left pocket zip, is what appears to be, a cabochon 'dragon's eye' pin, in a silver/grey mount [Series V, Series VII, Back To Earth].

07. There is an unknown pin badge that appears on the screen-right lapel [Series V].

08. A scrambled egg patch can be found near the lowest edge of the screen-left lapel [Series V]. FOUND

09. On the opposite side of the jacket, near the uppermost edge of the screen-right zipped pocket, can be found a bronze-coloured, rectangular metal pin [Series V].

The Inquisitor

10. The Corporal Chevrons, as seen on the screen-left sleeve, seem to feature a blue tone instead of the usual black-against-yellow [Series III-Back To Earth].

11. On the screen-left lapel, can be found a silver, side-on view, motorcycle pin [Series VII, Back To Earth].

12. The iconic, yet likely generic, winking smiley face patch can be found on the shoulder of the screen-right sleeve [Series III-V].

13. Transposed onto the latest jacket, an oversized star emblem, that almost looks like a hubcap, can be found between the shoulder blades on the jacket's rear-side. One 'spoke' appears to be either missing, or broken-off, with two opposing 'P' shapes in its centre [Series III-V, Series VII, Back To Earth-The Promised Land].

Blue
14. As seen briefly on the screen-left sleeve, above the 27th CRS, STS-41G, and F14-Tomcat patches, there are three unknown pins. One appears to be a chrome skull & crossbones, which rests above two additional pins below it. These disappear between when Cat & Lister land on Backwards World, and the reverse pub fight [Series III].

15. A blue/purple shield-shaped patch, featuring a red lightning bolt behind a yellow oval, can be found on the lower screen-right sleeve [Series V].

16. A Rolling Stones pin, that appears to be soft enamel with gold edging/backing, is positioned on the jacket's screen-left front [Series III-IV]. FOUND

17. I remain on the fence regarding the Honda Wing Pin; mostly, as I think there might have been two different versions used. In some shots, it appears to be brass-coloured, and in others, soft enamelled and mustard yellow [Series III-IV].

18. The jacket features a soft enamelled London Underground pin, which resides beneath the screen-right breast pocket [Series V, Series VII, Back To Earth]. FOUND

Backwards
19. A red, embroidered "L" can be found, initially on the screen-right lapel, before migrating up to the screen-left collar for Series V [Series III-V].

20. What appears to be a steel dog-tag hangs from the screen-left sleeve cuff [Series III-V, Series VII, Back To Earth].

21. The fabled 'Silver Pin'... FOUND

... That's all I can remember. It goes without saying, if anybody has any ideas whatsoever on the above, please feel free to drop the project a line. Even hi-res images to help with the search would be appreciated muchly. All-in, I doubt I'll ever be able to find every single component. The chances are, a fair few were limited run, and next to impossible to positively ID, now, more than three decades-on from being shot on SD videotape. It's taken decades just to get this far. Though, I hope that I'll be able to cross a few more off the list, at least.

The search continuums!
